Como toda arquitecta, Lizeth conoce los calculos precisos. Eso es exactamente lo que está en su mente cuando monta su yegua, Catrina, y corre hacia el primero de tres barriles en una Carrera de barriles de rodeo. El binomio debe maniobrar sorteando la tríada de barriles sin tirarlos e intentar cruzar la línea de meta en 20 segundos o menos.
Durante la semana, Lizeth es un Supervisor Civil que trabaja en la supervision de la obra para Walbridge de México en el Proyecto Ford de Chihuahua. Los fines de semana, ella es una competidora de Carrera de barriles en rodeos. El evento reta a ambos, caballo y jinete para completar un patron en forma de trébol alrededor de tres barriles ubicados en un triángulo. Se califican penalidades por golpear o tirar un barril así como los tiempos. El ganador es el binomio que completa el circuito en el menor tiempo.
Los sueños hasta ahora han tenido un rol muy importante en la vida de Lizeth. Ella dijo que a la edad de tres años ya soñaba con ser una arquitecta como su padre. Ella obtuvo un título de Arquitectura con especialidad en Diseño Arquitectónico y Construcción en 2012 y una Maestría en Diseño Arquitectónico Sustentable en el 2015. Ambos fueron obtenidos en el Instituto Superior de Arquitectura y Diseño de Chihuahua.
A la edad de siete años, Lizeth vió corer a las barrileras profesionales en un rodeo local y entónces soñó en convertirse en una barrilera. Hoy, despues de entrenar seis años en el Centro Ecuestre de Chihuahua (MVZ. Ricardo Herrera como entrenador), ella ya está compitiendo en tres circuitos regionales: La Asociación Nacional de Caballos Barrileros (NBHA); la Asociación de Vaqueros de Rodeo Profesional (PRCA) y la Federación Mexicana de Rodeos (FMR).
Catrina fue un regalo de su tío. La pareja entrena de dos a tres horas al día durante cuatro días por semana. Durante los fines de semana Lizeth dedica dos horas a bañar y cepillar a Catrina.
“Ella es muy lista”, dijo Lizeth, “ella no es solo mi caballo, ella es mi todo y disfruto cada minuto que pasamos juntas”.
Ambas han hecho muy buen equipo, durante el 2017 han obtenido los siguientes resultados:
• Primer lugar de la Quinta División en el evento de NBHA en Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua
• Segundo lugar de la Cuarta División en el evento de la NBHA en Aldama, Chihuahua, y
• Quinto lugar de la Quinta División en la final estatal de la NBHA en Camargo, Chihuahua.
“He aprendido muchas cosas y valores de otras barrileras, y estoy segura que con el tiempo continuaré aprendiendo más y lograre ser un mejor jinete” dijo Lizeth. “La clave está en disfrutar y ser constante en lo que se hace, las recompensas y el éxito llegan solas.”

As a trained architect, Lizeth knows about precise calculation. That’s exactly what’s on her mind when she directs her horse, Catrina, toward the first of three barrels in a rodeo ring. The pair must maneuver around a triad of heavy barrels without knocking into them and try to cross the finish line in 20 seconds or less.
On weekdays, Lizeth is a Civil Supervisor overseeing construction work for Walbridge de Mexico on a Ford project in Chihuahua. On weekends, she’s a competitive rodeo barrel racer. The event challenges horse and rider to complete a cloverleaf-shaped pattern around three barrels set in a triangle. Strike or knock over a barrel and a stiff time penalty is assessed. The winner is the tandem that completes the circuit in the fastest time.
Dreams have played a big role in Lizeth’s life so far. She said that at the age of three, she dreamed of becoming an architect like her father. She earned a degree in architecture, with a specialty in construction and architectural design, in 2012 and a master’s degree in sustainable architectural design in 2015. Both degrees were earned at the Instituto Superior de Arquitectura y Diseño de Chihuahua.
As a seven-year-old, Lizeth watched experienced riders race at a local rodeo and then dreamed of becoming a barrel racer. Today, after six years of training at the Centro Ecuestre de Chihuahua under the tutelage of MVZ Ricardo Herrera, she’s competing on three regional circuits: the National Barrel Horse Assn. (NBHA); the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Assn. (PRCA); and the Mexican Rodeo Federation (FMR.)
Catrina was a gift from Lizeth’s uncle. The pair trains together two to three hours per day over four days each week. On weekends, Lizeth dedicates two hours to bathing and brushing Catrina.
“She is very smart,” Lizeth said. “She’s not only my horse, she’s my everything. I enjoy every minute we share together.”
They are developing into a good team. In 2017, the pair achieved these results:
First place in the Fifth Division at an NBHA event in Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua;
Second place in the Fourth Division at an NBHA event in Aldama, Chihuahua; and
Fifth place in the Fifth Division at the NBHA state finals in Camargo, Chihuahua.
“I learned a lot of things and values from the other barrel racers, and I’m sure as time passes I’ll continue to learn more and become a better rider,” Lizeth said. “I enjoy everything about racing. I’m trying to be consistent in what I do. I see rewards and success coming along.”
